Fluffy Tennis Balls: Daniil Medvedev has once more voiced his displeasure with the new Dunlop tennis balls being used at several ATP hard court competitions, claiming they are too large.
The world No. 7 asserted that the balls “are like apples” and are injuring some players during his 6-4, 6-2 victory over Matteo Arnaldi on Monday at the Dubai Tennis Championships.
“The balls were like apples in the previous two games,” according to Medvedev. “They are enormous. You’re sort of playing padel, really.
“When you hit the ball or when someone else angles it, you no longer feel in control of the game.
“After two or three games with fresh balls, both in Doha and here, I noticed that the game slowed down.
“My match, which I won 6-4, 6-2, lasted an hour and a half, which is absurd, to be honest. The lengthy points and diminished significance of the serve are to blame.”
Not for the first time, Medvedev has offered his opinion on the subject.
After defeating Andy Murray in the Qatar Open final, he commented, “I believe the toughest for me was to get acclimated to the balls. I want to say a little bit more about it because, in Australia, I thought that these balls were not suitable for hard courts, and in the match with [Sebastian] Korda, before the match, I had a pretty bad wrist ache, but I figured, well, that’s my problem, so I’m not going to talk anything about it.”
“Later, in Rotterdam, doubles players approached me and began talking about balls and how everyone has elbow and wrist problems and that they believe it is because of the balls. Wow, so I’m not the only one, I think to myself.
“I now see Korda, Holger Rune, Stefanos Tsitsipas, and who else, all with wrist, elbow, and shoulder injuries. So, I believe that these balls are bad on hard courts. They become really fluffy, and as I mentioned, using your racquet to play them is a great shock.”
Murray has also expressed his displeasure with the Dunlop balls’ subpar construction.
